Apethorpe Hall is a large Grade 1 listed country house, dating from the late 15th century with many significant alterations, particularly of the 16th and 17th centuries. Besides the main house there is an extensive stable block as well as many garden structures. The site has been uninhabited for over 25 years, with many parts in very poor conditions. A Phase 1 programme of repairs was carried out in 2005-2008. The Phase 2 programme will have a contract value of GBP2-3million with a start on site in early 2011 and completion around 2013.
The work involves a variety of repairs to the whole range of historic structures. This will include, repairs to stone-slated and lead roofs, stonemasonry and brickwork repairs, structural repairs involving decayed timbers and defective masonry, repairs to timber and leaded light windows, joinery and paneling repairs, repairs to internal lime plaster (both plain and decorative), redecoration etc.
English Heritage is seeking a main contractor specialising in repairs to historic buildings with considerable experience of major conservation projects on a similar scale.
