I region Region Halland används inom hälso- och sjukvården ett vård-IT system som heter VAS (vårdadministrativt system). VAS ägs av Norrbottens läns landsting och utvecklingen av VA sker enligt framtaget samverkansavtal mellan Norrbottens läns landsting, Jämtlands läns landsting och region Region Halland i det s.k. VAS+-projektet. I VAS + projektet deltar Region Halland både i den operativa arbetsgruppen, DOS och i styrgruppen, VAS-rådet.
De prioriterade utvecklingsområdena och de medel som avsatts hittills omfattar inte läkemedelsfunktionalitet för slutenvården. I styrgruppen VAS-rådet finns för närvarande inte någon samsyn kring hur läkemedels funktionaliteten bör prioriteras. För Region Hallands del är denna funktionalitet högprioriterad av flera skäl; främst för att man upplever nuvarande analoga modell som ytterst osäker med stora patientrisker men också för att nationella IT-satsningar omfattar funktionalitet som har direkt bäring på läkemedelsfunktioner både inom den öppna- och den slutna vården.
Vid VAS-Rådsmötet 11.4.2011 beslutades om att Region Halland med stöd av samverkansavtalets klausul om egenfinansiering av prioriterade funktioner, får upphandla och införa en tredjeparts funktionalitet för läkemedelshantering, och som kan integreras mot VAS och VAS+ på lämpligt sätt.
