DESC: The U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric and Administration (NOAA), and National Marine Fisheries in Miami, FL, intends to procure services to deploy 50 satellite tags. One of the Southeast Fisheries Science Center's methods of performing sea turtle research is the use of satellite telemetry. The government uses satellite tags to assess annual survival rates, determine the impact of fisheries interactions, and spatial distribution of sea turtles. As such the government has worked extensively with commercial fishing fleet to develop satellite tagging capabilities to meet research needs and regularly work with the longline fisherman. This will be the implementation of the full study of pelagic juvenile loggerhead turtles; a pilot study was conducted in 2003. Objectives: Expand research on sea turtles using satellite tags that can be deployed on turtles smaller than our previous research and increase our knowledge on the potential impacts sea turtle/fishery interactions. The contractor will deploy up to 50 satellite tags on sea turtles ≥30 cm in the Northeast Distant Region of the Atlantic Ocean. The search will occur on relatively calm days in warm waters (≥70 deg F) and along oceanographic fronts where loggerhead turtles may congregate; each day's search will be at least 8 hours in duration. Once turtles are sighted, the inflatable boat will be launched, with the captain (or their designee) and one crew member aboard, in pursuit of loggerhead turtles. Turtles will be dip netted or captured by hand from the surface, placed in the inflatable boat, and ferried to the subcontracted fishing vessel where pop-off archival transmitting tags will be attached. The study will end once 5 days of searching have been expended or up to 50 turtles ≥30 cm straight carapace length have been captured, whichever occurs first.
Specifications: -Provide up to 5 8-hour days during calm weather to search for loggerhead sea turtles ≥30 cm straight carapace length at the surface in warm waters of the Northeast Distant Region of the Atlantic Ocean. Run time to the optimal area is not to be included in the 8 hours.
